Semi-abandoned village deep in the Sahara desert in Northern Chad.

Emi Moussi – the highest moutain in the Sahara. I ran up it’s second peak to try and get a view of the others as they picked their way up to summit watching every step (i get paranoid about snakes). I then realised that in the desert heat I should’ve just walked :-S To the right right of the peak as we look at it here is the crator, rumoured to be biggest volcanic crator in the world. A previous expedition were held hostage here for several weeks. If we were expecting bandits however, we only found friends. Nov 14

Ahamit and Ginge pause for a rest on the way down from the volcanic mountain of Emi Koussi, the Sahara stretching away thousands of metres below us.

Red boulders at the side of the road – beware … land mines. The boulders get closer and closer together until they are just a few meters apart, and you know you are crossing right over a front. There have been so many mines laid in the Sahara it is now difficult to tell which minefield was laid by whom. The vast majority here are Libyan, French and British – left over from the Second World War – none of whom have made any serious attempt to clear the mines once laid. It is often the case that the most gruesome and telling signs of the World’s power struggles remain best preserved at the very fringes of civilisation. North East Chad

Sneaking ‘under the radar’ into Libya (the long way – across the Sahara). If you look closely you’ll see our 4x4s. There isn’t exactly a border post. In fact it’s fairly dubious if anyone outside our party has ever been through this valley. I would struggle to give it an epic enough name.

Typically broken ground on the approach to Bikku Bitti – Libya’s highest mountain. A speed must be maintained so that excessive water is not used, but also care must be taken to avoid dangers- a snake-bite or any serious injury in such a remote place could be tricky to deal with. The nearest water is several hundred kilometres away and the nearest hospital two thousand kilometres away over some pretty awkward terrain.

Rock Art. dated around 3000BC. It’s unlikely anyone has been here since. Libya

Who would have thought the middle of the sahara desert looks like this? Another un-named valley, Libya.
